And so it begins

It's 2017 and I have decided to start another blog as a place to reflect on things personal, cultural, political and social.  My identity these days revolves around being an adoptive stay at home mom, former professional boxer and high school educator and an engaged citizen living in the Mordecai community in Raleigh, North Carolina.  After 8 years under the calm, thoughtful leadership of President Obama where America saw a period of stability and growth after the awful financial recession of 2008, we are under the rule of Donald Trump and for the first time in my life I feel truly fearful for our country and our democracy.  I cried for a week after he was elected and his presidency so far has been a confirmation of all that I feared. For the first time in my life, I feel like I must be an engaged as a citizen and resist actively all that this man stands for.

I went to the women's march here in Raleigh on January 21st.  It was the first time I had ever gone on a march.  It was a huge success with 17,000 participants.  Carly Jones who is also the media and communications director at my daughter's preschool did an amazing job as the mc and it was inspiring to hear the diverse group of speakers and performers.  Being in a state that has seen the worst of Republican obstructionist politics, it was refreshing to be at this march and be surrounded by people who feel as I do.  The response worldwide was a beacon of light in what feels like the start of very dark times.  I have since filled out postcards with our new community group called Mordecai's voice, attended a smaller protest in front of Senator Thom Tillis' office and called Senator Richard Burr to voice my opposition to Betsy Devos, Trump's cabinet pick for education secretary.  I am determined to remain engaged and active.  I hope to work hard this year at building a local community here and just figure out how to live my life and provide for my family.

Although this first post is a reflection of the toxic political climate that our country currently faces, my hope is for this blog a place to make sense of my life and catalog those things that inspire as well as bother me and cause me to pause and think.
